You really want that grant, but does your board agree? You’ll quickly find that getting grant funding is even more difficult when you don’t have the backing of your board of directors.
In his book “How to Win Grants,” Alan Silver wrote that the first step to getting the backing of your board is to convince your nonprofit’s chief to buy-in to the need for the particular grant. Once you have his support, you can both head to your board and explain why the grant in question will help the organization fulfill its mission.
Silver listed three things you should do to get your board on board with your grants plan:
- Make sure your board understands your organization’s need to seek grant funding and supports your grants development plan.
- Ask them who they know that can help fund your projects (examples include trustees at local foundations and company executives with authority to make corporate contributions to your project).
- Ask them to help you by attending funder site visits, “making the call” to corporate funders, and participating in other activities for which they are prepared and enthusiastic.
