Making Data Actionable: How Best Friends Animal Society Scaled Innovation on Behalf of 6M Furry Friends

The mission of Best Friends Animal Society (BFAS) is to bring about a time when there are No More Homeless Pets and their immediate goal is to end the killing of cats and dogs in United States’ shelters by 2025.  In order to measure progress towards that goal, and to be able to celebrate when they achieve that goal, they have to be able to measure the problem and to measure the problem they need data.

As recently as 2016 there was no complete and accurate master shelter list for the country and there certainly was no accurate data detailing how many animals were being sheltered and killed.  BFAS has since created a one-of-a-kind master shelter list for the country and are collecting data from the majority of the shelters on that list.  In addition to driving their life saving strategy, they have published a dashboard to the public that allows them to drill into the data for their own community, or any community around the country, and get involved with saving lives.  To make this a reality BFAS couldn’t rely on their legacy on-premises platforms and infrastructure, and so, their journey to the cloud began.
