Setting expectations is one of the most important things you can do as a manager. When it comes to your organization’s volunteer board members, Gayle Gifford, ACFRE, recommends crafting agreements with each of them that specifically spells out their commitments, including what will be accomplished and when, and what support and feedback will be provided.
In her chapter of the book, “The Essential Fundraising Handbook for Small Nonprofits,” the president of Providence, R.I-.based fundraising firm Cause & Effect, Inc., suggested other ways to manage your volunteer team for success and become a “people mobilizer:”
- Create bite-sized tasks that volunteers can successfully accomplish;
- Offer a menu of options;
- Match the right person to the job;
- Be clear about the goal and put it in writing;
- Live up to your own obligations;
- Give your volunteers ongoing feedback;
- Help them solve problems; and,
- Celebrate important milestones.
