When constantly scanning for potential risk at every turn, it is sometimes easy to miss the ones right under your nose.
During the 2015 Risk Summit Michael Gurtier, managing partner at Safe-Wise Consulting, presented the workshop “Singin’ in the Rain: Facility Risk Management Lessons and Trends,” and shared 11 spots where organizational risk might be hiding in plain sight.
Exterior building locations including walks, steps, lawns, trees and vegetation and lighting.
Parking lots. Again, proper lighting is a factor here along with traffic flow, security measures, cameras and pedestrian safety.
How old is your facility’s roof and how resistant is it to changes in the weather? Also consider drains, gutters, downspouts and rooftop HVAC units.
Consider trip, slip and fall risks in your facility’s entries and hallways. Lighting and security should also be part of the equation.
Security, both of the physical space and digitally, are risk factors in the office space. Other office considerations include trip and falls, ergonomics and storage uses.
Speaking of storage, be aware of potential hazards in storage and utilities spaces including fire risks, security and dangerous chemicals.
If your organization works with residences, consider some of the same risks associated with homeownership and renting, including home security, fire prevention and safety in the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom where, hopefully, the bed bugs aren’t biting.
Though they may not be used often, evaluate the risks specialty spaces such as gymnasiums, pools, fitness areas, playgrounds and rinks bring.
For non-owned facilities, understand roles and responsibilities, insurance, contracts and hold harmless agreements.
Familiarize yourself with finance and transfer risks such as waivers, workers compensation, codes and ordinances and general liability.
Plan for emergencies. Have a written plan, security and communications in place.
