The Methodology of Our Best Nonprofits To Work For Report

Included in the just-released April 1 edition of The NonProfit Times is our annual 50 Best Nonprofits to Work For Report. This year we have a new number one organization, with the National Older Worker Career Center, Inc (NOWCC) taking over the top spot from the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP), which fell to number three. NOWCC, based in Arlington, Va., has 23 employees making it one of the smaller organizations to top our list.

Overall, the top three organizations (NOWCC, WWP, and AHC, Inc) represented an equal mix of the small (15 to 49 employees), medium (50-249), and large (250 or more) categories.

How are our winners selected? Although any nonprofit in the country can nominate their organization for our list, the creation of the list is far from a simple process. “Thousands of nonprofits clicked on the link for information on being part of the process,” said Paul Clolery, editor-in-chief of The NonProfit Times. “The examiners talked to roughly 10,000 people as part of the process. This was not a simple pageant. The people interviewed for each  applicant were both internal and external.”

The assessment process was managed by NPT and Harrisburg, Pa.-based Best Companies Group (BCG), an independent workplace research firm. Nominees had to fill out an 81-question survey to collect information on benefits, policies, practices, and other information. Finally, organizations had to fill out a 76-question Employee Engagement & Satisfaction Survey (EESS), which was used to evaluate the workplace experience and organizational culture. More than 10,000 employees working for the nominated organizations were surveyed.

From this information, BCG and NPT selected the 50 winners which you will see listed in the Best Nonprofits to Work For 2014. You can see the full list by clicking here. We are also excited to announce a new web-only feature for this year’s report: Audio interviews with eight of the winners. Listen to all eight interviews and hear what the winners think about being selected as one of the 50 best nonprofits.
