Jackpot: Stuttering Foundation Receives 200 Mega Millions Tickets

How would you react if you had 200 chances to win $425 million? The chances are it would be quite similar to what the employees at the Stuttering Foundation of America (SFA) are feeling: Excitement and anxiety.

The foundation received a surprise today when a donor sent the Memphis, Tenn.-based organization an envelope containing 200 tickets for tonight’s Mega Millions lottery drawing. Along with the tickets was a letter from the donor that explained that the gift was being made because the foundation had 40 years ago helped a couple whose child was suffering from stuttering during “her time of need.”

The letter was marked as coming from “The Smiths” in Enfield, Conn., and was sent to the foundation’s offices in St. Simons Island, Ga.

“They wrote they wished they had a million dollars to donate to us to thank us,” explained Jane Fraser, president of the SFA. “Since they didn’t, they bought 200 lottery tickets and sent them over.”

Fraser confirmed to The NonProfit Times that, if they win the $425 million prize, the money will be used to assist kids with stuttering problems in finding the help they need. She also said that the prize, if they win it, would represent the largest gift given to the foundation since the initial $2,500 given in 1947 by Malcom Fraser, her father.

The Mega Millions lottery annually hands out some of the largest cash prizes in the country. The minimum Mega Millions advertised jackpot is $15 million, paid in 30 graduated yearly installments, increasing 5 percent per year. You only need one set of winning numbers to win, and the jackpot size increases if there is no top-prize winner. You can also take a reduced cash lump sum payment.

The largest jackpot in Mega Millions, as well as in American lottery, history was $656 milion annuity value (with a cash option of $474,000,000) for the March 30, 2012 drawing, in which there were three jackpot-winning tickets; one each in Illinois, Kansas and Maryland. All three tickets had been claimed by April 18, with each set of winners choosing the cash option of $158,000,000, a one-third share. The largest Mega Millions prize was $319 million (annuity) for the lone winning ticket of the March 25, 2011 drawing.

The winning numbers for the Mega Millions jackpot will be selected tonight.
