Rural Fundraising, Spending Lag Urban Centers

By Samuel J. Fanburg

Even though 22 percent of the nation’s poor live in rural areas, those areas account for only 8 percent of the total spent by nonprofit organizations. And with such poverty issues, only 10.4 percent of nonprofits in rural areas are dedicated to human services.

These are among the results from a new study by the Bridgespan Group, in Boston, Mass., called Small but Tough: Nonprofits in Rural America. Written by Alex Neuhoff and Andrew Dunckelman, the study illustrates the large disparities rural nonprofits have compared to urban nonprofits in their fiscal health and service reach.

American Bible Society needed a better, more efficient way to manage
interactions with supporters. They chose Blackbaud CRM to help them gain a holistic view of their supporters by integrating direct response, major giving, and online marketing together on one platform. Learn more and watch the video at www.blackbaud.com/AmericanBibleSociety.

Direct Mail...
3 elements of donor acquisition strategies

Of those organizations that remained fiscally buoyant throughout the heart of the recession, they shared one thing. They increased their acquisition programs even though it was expensive to do so.

During the 2011 National Catholic Development Conference (NCDC) in Orlando, Fla., Bryan Terpstra, vice president of fundraising and Robin Riggs, chief creative officer at LW Robbins in Holliston, Mass., gave some insights on how nonprofits could update their acquisition programs.

Social Media...
Finding new donors through new media

With a multitude of social media options at your fingertips, it might be hard to find the tool that works best for a particular situation. And even if you find the correct tool, how do you use it?

During the 2011 National Catholic Development Conference (NCDC) in Orlando Fla., Eric Streiff, senior vice president, and Mark Loux, vice president at Douglas Shaw & Associates in Naperville, Ill., offered four tips on how to use the micro-blogging service Twitter.

Fundraising...
7 ways of motivating your board

An efficient fundraising program can only work when all gears in an organization are running together. A board of directors can be especially helpful in securing gifts but are often unfamiliar with what fundraising achieves and their overall job capacity within the organization.

During a session for the 2011 Bridge Conference, Gail Perry of Gail Perry Associates in Raleigh, N.C., discussed some of her own suggestion on how to actively engage a board of directors in the fundraising process.
