What sample size is needed for response rate tests in direct response marketing? That’s the question everyone’s asking and the subject of countless articles and blogs. Industry people will probably say that samples of 5,000 or 10,000 are adequate for testing mailing response rates...

Planned Giving: 10 Ideas For Coping With The Pain

Raising funds in the worst of economic times since the Great Depression compelled organizations to embrace new strategies and tactics. Nonprofit leaders say these lessons learned will continue to influence their fundraising in the future:

* Evidence Of Impact: Realize that donors are more sophisticated. Don’t expect that donors will give big bucks to a particular institution because it is socially prestigious to do so -- as some did in the past. Show donors how you’re making an impact.

* Make it short and about me. Don’t expect donors to respond to marketing pitches in the abstract as they have in the past.

Social Media...
Managing multiple channels with limited time

For a nonprofit with limited staff, assigning someone to a single task often means neglecting something else. This is especially true of communications, where a direct mail or email campaign can require a serious time commitment.

Management...
6 steps to leadership development

So, there’s going to be a leadership deficit in the nonprofit sector in the next few years. Word is that older leaders are going to be retiring in numbers that can’t be easily replaced.

That could mean that many leadership positions are going to be filled by people who are still earning their wings.

Learning as we go along is not necessarily a bad thing, but it could be quite helpful to offer development opportunities to leaders and would-be leaders of nonprofits.

Fundraising...
4 phases of a feasibility study

In the world of government, "study" usually means a method of postponing or preventing action, but in the nonprofit world a feasibility study might be necessary to get something accomplished.

Speaking during an international conference on fundraising, Chris Rollins of SOCH Foundation and Jim Lyons of Pride Philanthropy offered advice about conducting feasibility studies.
