Nonprofits and academic institutions that study the nonprofit sector often generate reports and outcomes research. These reports can be used to educate the public, advance an organization’s goals, or a combination of the two. Sometimes these research projects are strictly in-house. In this case, they can be used to better understand a project they are undertaking or to adjust their marketing techniques. Research can also be used to better understand donors, or to find potential donors. For example, a nonprofit could use demographic research to find out which individuals would be more likely to eventually give a major gift. It is also used to examine the impact of the service provided by an organization.
