Think small with giving apps

Think about your organization from the perspective of a three-inch screen. Why? Because that’s all about all the space that your average smart phone can display.

Aaron Pava, co-founder of Oakland, Calif.-based CivicActions, suggests starting with mobile and then adapting to a regular website. Also think about what makes your smart phone “smart,” which are things that can’t be factored into your regular website.

Pava presented a session called “Open Source Mobile Apps for Social Change” at the Nonprofit Technology Conference (NTC) held earlier this year in San Francisco, Calif.

A mobile site can be created with open-source technology such as Drupal, he said, and it will be a difference version of your website, so think about high-value content.

How do you decide what to put on your mobile website? Pava said stick to the old 80/20 rule. Where does the most important 20 percent of your context exist? Once you answer that question, focus your mobile site on that 20 percent.
