16 digital fundraising tips

Even though online fundraising has become more common it still requires a strategic approach. In short, fundraisers need to know what they’re doing.
During Fundraising Day in New York 2013, sponsored by the New York City chapter of the Association for Fundraising Professionals (AFP), Paul Habig of SankyNet, Carla Perlowin Chadwick of Covenant House, Dave Onate of the Africa Wildlife Foundation and Tricia Reyes of Consumer Reports offered the following digital fundraising tips:
- More to say, less often. Beware obsessive Facebook posting. Be succinct but informative.
- “Thank you” goes a long way.
- If you want a monthly donor, ask for a monthly donation.
- It’s not how many likes, but how many people are discussing the message.
- There’s no need to sweat over peer-to-peer fundraising.
- New technologies make it easier than ever to bring a mission to an international audience.
- Tweets should create a conversation, spark a debate and cause a reaction.
- Mobile Web usage is estimated to overtake desktop by 2015.
- Responsive design is the approach suggesting content and design should respond to the user irrespective of the device.
- Don’t be afraid to fail.
- Omni-channel is the new channel.
- Content is king.
- Create user-friendly Web content.
- Sending one big email image is risky.
- Quality over quantity. (Be wary of offers to increase Facebook likes overnight.)
- Don’t always jump on the bandwagon.
