10 conversations between bosses and staff

Although conversations between bosses and employees can range from the hostile to the pointless, managers and managed do need to speak to one another now and again. Those conversations don’t have to be useless, and in his book “Thirteeners” Daniel F. Prosser offers what he calls 10 Connecting Conversations between bosses and those under them.

  •  They are connecting because they maintain communication and enhance workplace efficiency. Prosser’s 10 Connecting Conversations are:
  •  The conversation for being contributable. This conversation gives everyone a voice.
  • The conversation for being acknowledged and appreciated. This can transform people’s lives as well as helping the organization.
  • The conversation for being aligned. Having everyone moving in the same direction creates energy.
  • The conversation for being accountable. The results of people’s actions are fully measured, and everyone’s contribution is visible.
  •  The conversation for being in communication. Employees hear about things directly from management, not accidentally or through the grapevine.
  • The conversation for being related. This is about connectedness, and it means nothing happens unless there is a relationship.
  •  The conversation for being responsible. This is not about blaming. It is about taking the initiative to do or cause what is necessary to get the job done.
  • The conversation for demonstrating integrity. Example: Management saying it will do a certain thing, and then really doing it.
  • The conversation for possibility. Employees see a future for the organization, and for themselves.
  • The conversation for fun, rewards and gratefulness. This means employees being grateful about working for the organization. It is possible.
