Although some managers say “my way or the highway,” a successful leader will try to build consensus. But what separates a successful leader from one who runs an ordinary workplace?
In his book The Gifted Boss, Dale Dauten, takes seven characteristics of ordinary bosses and turns them on their head to encapsulate “the gifted boss.”
- A gifted boss offers an exceptional environment including the opportunity to be exceptional.
- A gifted boss has few rules but high standards.
- A gifted boss knows how to work outside bureaucracy.
- A gifted boss has questions instead of answers. (They understand that letting employees figure out the answer is more than the question itself.)
- A gifted boss buys help.
- A gifted boss encourages you to enter the next rung on the personal development ladder.
- A gifted boss seeks allies, instead of team players.
