5 uses for nonprofit blogs

Everybody seems to have an opinion these days. And, all of those thoughts can be broadcast to the world instantly through the use of social media. You probably know all about the uses of Facebook and Twitter for your nonprofit, but have you ever thought about creating a blog?

Blogs, which is short for “web logs,” are similar to online bulletin boards. They are online diaries focused on a specific topic, organization, or person, and visitors can leave comments that allow for dialog. In his book “Nonprofit Management 101,” Darian Rodriguez Heyman offers five ways that nonprofits can use blogs to advance their mission:

  • Field Reports: Have your staff members blog “in the field” with your clients. These types of posts should focus on a particular individual or group of individuals that your organization serves.
  • Inside Stories: Give your followers the inside scoop by creating posts that share insights on how your staff and volunteers actually do their work. This is a great way to show people how your organization makes an impact.
  • Event Coverage: Share stories or interviews from special events on your blog. This gives readers inside access to otherwise exclusive events.
  • Client Posts: This is content written by someone from outside the organization that has benefited from its work. Consider making these a regular feature on the blog.
  • Contests: Blogs are a great place to promote giveaways or other special contests. For example, challenge your audience to see who can share the most interesting story of your nonprofit’s impact, and offer a prize to the best one.
