As mobile technology becomes even more ubiquitous and inexpensive, nonprofits will surely need to adopt their websites for mobile technology. The next best bet is an application, though. Applications (apps) can help supporters perceive your organization or fundraising program in a different way.
In her book Social Media for Social Good, Heather Mansfield, describes the five must-have characteristics of a nonprofit Smartphone app.
- Useful -- Supporters are not going to want an application that restates an organization’s mission, vision and programs. Try incorporating breaking news and games that accentuate the focus of your nonprofit.
- Elegant Design -- You have to make sure the app looks good. This might entail hiring an app developer and designer, but it’s well worth it. A minimum budget of $10,000 will be required for the best design.
- Bug-Free -- Users will have zero tolerance for applications that crash. Test your app frequently before it’s released looking for issues and bugs.
- Links to Mobile Website -- Too many Smartphone apps link to desktop sites. Make sure your links go to mobile websites.
- Does Not Require Immediate Registration -- Nonprofits know the power of a supporter's personal information, but asking for an email address or phone number after first using your application is too much to ask.
