Major gifts are the most significant donations that can be given to a nonprofit. What qualifies as a major gift will vary from one organization to another. For some nonprofits, a major gift might be in the range of $1,000, while others might consider it to be around $1 million. The longevity of the nonprofit has a big role to play in determining what quantifies a major gift. Organizations that have been around for a number of years will have had more time to build up a donor base, making the standards higher for a major gift. Nonprofits will often have positions in their organization dedicated to solicitation of major gifts, such as the Major Gifts Officer.
