Management Tips » Advocacy
Nonprofit advocacy is lobbying for a cause. Advocacy can take a number of different forms. Organizations often will turn supporters to help fight a law that negatively impacts a cause. This usually comes in the form of direct communications to their followers. Many nonprofits have a page on a website that shows what people can do to be involved in the cause the organization supports. Nonprofits have to be careful when it comes to lobbying; if they do it too much, they can risk losing their tax-exempt status. The Internal Revenue Service defines lobbying as attempting to contact, or urging the public to contact, members of the government. That is why grassroots advocacy is considered the most effective form of advocacy for nonprofits. This can involve distributing educational materials on a subject or hold meetings to discuss public policy.
